What is TIVA?
The most commonly used drugs are Propofol (Hypnotic) and Remifentanil (Opioid). The after-effects of TIVA are much shorter lasting than gas anaesthesia due to the half-life of Propofol which also has an anti-emetic effect.1
TIVA techniques; Target Controlled infusions (TCI) are performed by the anaesthetist using a dedicated syringe pump or TCI System. These calculate the infusion rates of drugs necessary to meet the required concentration for each individual patient using algorithms within the TCI pump system.
Algorithms in the syringe pump support the Get It Right First Time Model (GIRFT) improving the patient experience and efficiency for busy operating theatres.
When compared to anaesthesia by volatile inhaled gases, TIVA/TCI can offer many advantages like: enhanced recovery after surgery with a reduction in the incidence of post-operative nausea &
vomiting2
and rapid recovery of consciousness leading to quicker hospital discharge.
SALG released recommendations for product features to support/optimise safe TIVA practice, the chart below shows how Mediplus TIVA sets meet all recommendations.
